Hetman Mazepa holds a significant place in the history of Ukraine. As a hetman (one of the highest political and military titles during the Cossack era: 15th-18th century in Ukraine), his goal was to unite Ukrainian lands and enhance Ukraine's geopolitical importance.
By the order of Peter I, the Russian Orthodox Church declared an anathema against Ivan Mazepa. However, in 2018, it was revealed that the Ecumenical Patriarchate had never recognized this non-canonical anathema, as it was imposed solely for political reasons.
The act of carrying Mazepa’s saber is deeply symbolic. It reflects:
This gesture serves as a reminder to the world of the strength and values Ukrainians embodied 300 years ago and still uphold today: sovereignty, unity, and cooperation with partners to defeat a common enemy.
Mazepa’s vision for Hetmanshyna (the autonomous Cossack state in Ukraine) was to make it stronger and more independent from Russian influence. This ambition made him an enemy of Peter I.

During the Great Northern War, Mazepa allied with Swedish King Karl XII. Together, they sought to free Ukraine from Moscow’s control, with Ukrainian and Swedish armies fighting against Russia. Unfortunately, both forces were defeated.
